It’s been very difficult listening to the news recently, with so many terrible things happening. As an organisation which is involved in the fire industry, we would particularly like to express our heartfelt condolences to everyone who has been affected by the Grenfell Tower tragedy. It’s hard to find the words which really convey how we feel, and our hearts go out to those who have lost loved ones or who have been caught up in the incident in any way.
In this blog, we often write about fire safety but this tragedy is just too devastating for us to even start to say how it could have been prevented. However among all the news coverage of Grenfell Tower and the experts who were interviewed, there was one which stood out.
This was on the Jeremy Vine show on Friday 16th June, which can be heard here: – it’s around 28 minutes in. You’ll hear former firefighter Russ Timpson who now heads up the Tall Buildings Fire Safety Network. This contains thoughtful and professional comment, with advice on fire safety in tower blocks as well as insight on fire integrity and building issues. It’s really worth listening to.
There is also the news from Portugal in the last few days about a forest fire which has claimed so many lives, with some heartbreaking stories of attempts to escape the path of the flames. At the moment, across the UK, we are sweltering in the highest temperatures for years, and this makes us more likely to have barbecues or campfires. We’ve written before about both bush fires and barbecues and how to enjoy safe outdoor cooking. We would repeat this advice.
