We wrote last year about a warning issued by the London Fire Brigade after someone set fire to their kitchen by using their toaster to make cheese on toast. So I was astonished to read advice from one of the country’s best-loved chefs recently to do exactly this.
The offending piece in The Guardian – by Jamie Oliver, who in every other way is great – was all about how to make good toast. It contained the following: “In the past, I have turned the toaster on its side, put cheese on bread and slid it in so it toasts on one side and melts on the other. It’s a bit of a jiggle but it works.” The paper immediately published a correction, which also appears on its website: “Footnote: We strongly don’t recommend turning your toaster on its side to make cheese on toast or anything else, as it is a fire hazard. See this warning from the London Fire Brigade.”
We would heartily endorse this warning, particularly in view of the story of the man we wrote about in our blog. But we would strongly recommend Jamie’s ‘Incredible slow-roasted shoulder of lamb’….
