Oh dear. I’ve just come back from the supermarket and already the shelves are starting to display Christmas items. It’s far too early!!!
But there is one seasonal message which needs to be spread. As we enter the run up to Christmas, lots of businesses will be taking on seasonal staff and, according to a recent warning, this can increase the risks from fire.
Temporary staff may not have the same level of fire safety awareness as permanent employees. As a result, they’re probably not as well equipped to take the steps needed to protect themselves, colleagues and customers if fire breaks out. So, as part of the recent Chief Fire Officers’ (CFOA) UK Business Safety Week, warnings have been put out to companies to ensure all staff are fully aware of potential fire risks and hazards, and that they know what action to take in an emergency.
The CFOA has issued the following advice to help spread the word to all staff, including temporary employees: keep it SIMPLE:
Store stock safely: keep corridors, stairs and exits clear.
Identify alarm points so you can warn others.
Make sure doors are closed to stop fire from spreading.
Place things that catch fire away from things that cause fire.
Let someone know if you spot fire safety problems.
Ensure everyone knows what to do if a fire alarm sounds.
