Landlords’ insurance claims: tell tenants how to turn off the water

As autumn gives way to winter, we all recall the big freeze of last year and the huge rise in burst pipes. Many of these were in rented accommodation, exacerbated by tenants not knowing how to turn off the water supply.

The National Landlords Association has warned that many rental properties suffered unnecessary damage last year from burst pipes because tenants hadn’t been told how to switch the water supply off in an emergency. Landlords should give this information to their tenants, and also ensure they are completely familiar with the central heating system.

Reported on comparenow.com, a spokesman for the NLA also advised that tenants should be told what to do if they are leaving the property over Christmas or any other time when there might be a sudden freeze.
