Check for hidden leaks
The recent extreme winter weather may have caused more damage than you realise, according to one UK utility company. It’s advising householders to check for ‘sneaky leaks’ around their property.
Freezing conditions during December and January caused ground movement in many areas. This may have put pressure on underground pipe joints and caused bursts or small leaks. According to United Utilities, the water can escape underground without ever coming to the surface. As well as being a huge waste of water and adding to metered water bills, this could store up problems in the future with building subsidence.
The first sign that something may be wrong is if your water pressure seems low. Householders with water meters should then turn off all taps and water appliances, take a meter reading, and then take a second reading an hour later. It should not have changed – but if it has, then you probably have a leak. For those without a meter who are worried about water loss, then either call your water company or your local plumber.
