Rise in claims against businesses

The British are now far more likely to make an insurance claim against a business, according to one UK insurer. The risk of being subject to a claim is higher for trades who have direct contact with the public, such as plumbers, electricians and carpenters. So it is vital for them to have the protection of a public liability policy.

The growth of the ‘claims culture’ in the UK has increased the risk of a claim against a business. Endsleigh Insurance reports that too many businesses – in particular tradespeople – are neglecting to take out public liability insurance, often in a bid to cut costs. But this is a false economy: the cost of an unexpected claim can be a severe blow to a business and, in the most extreme cases, can drive them to bankruptcy.

Insurance claims can be lodged by customers or even by passers-by. Compensation for injuries can be complex and defending yourself can be very expensive. Public liability insurance protects against the cost of compensation as well as the legal charges involved – and will also provide considerable peace of mind.
